I Guess Dad Was Right

Apr 25, 2014 | Alumni-Stories

I grew up in Hickory Township (now Hermitage)  but attended Sacred Heart School on the West Hill. All the kids I played with growing up went to public school and were eventually going to Hickory High. For years I looked forward to joining them there. Then, as I approached my final year at Sacred Heart to my dismay they began building Kennedy Christian High School. My father Bernard was a strong supporter of Catholic education and was adamant that I go to KCHS. I on the other hand was determined to meet up with my friends at Hickory. Over the summer of 1965 my father and I had many heated “discussions” about where I would attend high school. The issue was settled with an agreement. I would attend Kennedy for the first semester of my freshman year and if by Christmas I still favored Hickory I could transfer. So I set off to Kennedy determined to prove my father’s choice wrong but was met with an unexpected change of heart. By the end of my first week at KCHS and after meeting so many new kids from all over the Shenango Valley I had forgotten all about Hickory High and went on to enjoy four wonderful years at KCHS. I guess Dad was right after all.
